RMS Bands - 2017 Guest Clinician:  Dr. Shelley Axelson, Montclair State University

2/21/2017

The Randolph Middle School Band Department would like to thank the RMS PTO from their generous grant award to bring in a guest clinician, Dr. Shelley Axelson of Montclair State University to work with all three of our Middle School Bands. On the morning of Wednesday, February 21st during periods 1, 2, and 3, Dr. Axelson will listen to and watch the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade bands warm up and perform their concert pieces. She will then critique the performance and make suggests to the students and directors to improve.  After the students return to class, Dr. Axelson will meet with the band directors to further the discussion on improving the  band program.

  • Students should report to the band room after homeroom.
  • Students should wear regular "street" clothes to school for the event.
  • Students will return to class after the conclusion of Period 3.

Read below for Dr. Axelson's Biography:

Before coming to the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University, Shelley Axelson held a similar position at the University of Indianapolis in Indianapolis, Indiana, where her responsibilities included teaching conducting, clarinet, and a variety of instrumental music education classes. Prior to her appointment at Indianapolis, Professor Axelson was the Director of Bands at Central College in Pella, Iowa, Pasco Middle School in Dade City, Florida (co-author of Secondary Music Curriculum), and Richardson Junior High School in Richardson, Texas. Professor Axelson received an undergraduate degree in Music Education from the University of South Florida, a Master's Degree in Conducting from the University of Michigan, and the Doctor of Music degree in Conducting from Northwestern University. Her principal conducting teachers were Mallory Thompson and H. Robert Reynolds.
